Why does Green Valley have its own care market?

Green Valley was built from the 1960s as one of Arizona's first planned communities for older adults, and much of it remains age-restricted. With so many residents already retired, it supports its own assisted living and nursing care, so families can often move a parent within the community rather than 25 miles north into Tucson.

That matters for couples. When one spouse needs care, the other can visit daily without a freeway drive, and friends from the recreation centers can visit too.

How do seasonal residents affect availability?

Green Valley's population rises in winter as seasonal residents arrive, and short-term stays for respite or recovery compete with long-term placements. If a parent may need a short stay between November and March, ask facilities early whether they keep respite rooms and how far ahead they book.

Seasonal residents who need care also face paperwork: Arizona assisted living requires documentation dated within 90 days and tuberculosis screening, the same as for a permanent resident.

What about memory care south of Tucson?

19 of the Green Valley and Sahuarita facilities hold a directed care license, Arizona's license level for memory care. Small homes in both communities are licensed for all three service levels, which lets a resident stay put as dementia progresses.

Families in Quail Creek and Rancho Sahuarita often compare those homes with Green Valley centers that have secured neighborhoods. Visit both kinds.

Which agencies serve Green Valley families?

Pima Council on Aging serves all of Pima County, including Green Valley and Sahuarita: its resource line is (520) 790-7262, its SHIP Medicare counselors are at (520) 546-2011, and its ombudsmen visit facilities county-wide. ALTCS applications go through AHCCCS at (888) 621-6880 or online.

Ask about PCOA's presentations and workshops; some are held in the community rather than in midtown Tucson.

How do Green Valley couples plan for one spouse needing care?

Many Green Valley couples face the same question: one spouse needs help and the other is still independent. Options include adding in-home help, moving together into an assisted living center that has independent or personal care apartments, or moving the spouse who needs care to a nearby small home while the other stays in the house.

Money is part of the decision. If ALTCS may be needed later, the community spouse rules can protect resources for the spouse at home, but the planning works best before any assets are moved. PCOA's monthly ALTCS workshop and resource line, (520) 790-7262, are a good first stop.
