What is the difference between a directed care home and a memory care center?
A directed care home is a house licensed for ten or fewer residents, all sharing one living space and a small team of caregivers; a memory care center is a larger assisted living center with directed care beds, usually in a secured neighborhood with its own dining and activity spaces.
In Pima County 257 homes and 39 centers hold directed care licenses.
Which setting suits which person with dementia?
Homes often suit people who become anxious in crowds, wander less, and do better with the same faces daily; centers often suit people who are physically active, social and need room to walk.
Spend an hour in each at a busy time of day. Watch how caregivers redirect a resident who is upset.
How do staffing and nights differ?
A home may have one or two caregivers for up to ten residents and must disclose in the residency agreement whether someone is awake at night; a center spreads more staff across more residents and usually has awake night staff on each neighborhood.
Ask both for the number of awake caregivers on the night shift for the directed care residents specifically.
How do costs usually differ?
Homes usually quote one all-inclusive monthly rate, while centers often charge base rent plus a care-level fee; no published survey gives Tucson medians for either, so compare the total monthly cost at the same care level.
Ask whether either accepts ALTCS and at what room-and-board rate.
How do you compare their inspection records?
Use AZ Care Check for both: compare the latest two inspections, whether complaints led to citations, and any enforcement action, keeping in mind that a center with more residents will naturally have more inspections.
132 of Pima County's directed care facilities had no deficiencies cited at their latest rated inspection. Directed care list →
Can a couple live together if only one spouse has dementia?
In a center, a couple can often live in the assisted living side while the spouse with dementia moves to the secured neighborhood later, or share an apartment while needs allow; in a ten-bed home, couples sometimes share a room if both need care.
Ask how each place handles a couple whose needs diverge, and whether the healthier spouse can visit the secured area freely.
How do you know when a directed care home is no longer the right fit?
The signs are a resident who needs two people for every transfer, frequent falls at night, or care needs that the home's small staff cannot cover safely; at that point a center with more staff or a nursing home may be safer.
A good home will raise this with you early rather than wait for a crisis.
